WE ABOUT OURSELVES

We are pupils of the Pierre de Coubertin Gymnasium in Erfurt, a school specialized in sports. In 1998 our school achieved the state of an elite-school. Swimming, track-and-field, speedskating, cycling and football are the main disciplines. During the years our school brought out many good sportsmen, for instance, world and olympian champion in speed skating Gunda Niemann-Stirnemann as well as the olympian champions in cycling Marco Kummer and Maik Landsmann. On the 6th of July twenty pupils of the classes nine to eleven and two teachers of our school started the trip to Much Wenlock. Their mission was the exploration of William Penny Brookes`s life, his friendship to Pierre de Coubertin as well as the Much Wenlock Games. Two months before the trip, the pupils were chosen according to their facilities. To represent our school in a foreign country we had to have good English knowledge, success in sport and exemplary behavior. Besides, our group had to be close to scientific procedures and background information in sport history and a good know-how in computers. Our team consisted of table-tennis and volleyball players who were especially succesful in the Wenlock Games. Just as much engaged were our swimmers, speedskaters, ice-hockey and football players and athletes. They strengthened the team and took part in other athletic competitions. Loud support got our sportsmen by the German fan-club, who stood around the stadium and the playing field. In spite of the age differences we got along well, and supported each other. The English host families, teachers and pupils had contributed to this and here we want to say THANK YOU to all of them.
